No RESPECT at Kilcooley Community Forum

Rumours and speculation are rife that the Protestant defenders group RESPECT (Retaining Equality Supporting Protestant Ethos & Cultural Traditions) have asked to join Kilcooley Community Forum and other community groups across North Down. The group, established to highlight alleged discrimination against Protestants in North Down has been behind a number of peaceful protests in Bangor. Most recently (January) they held a protest at the Boyne Bridge on Brunswick Road.

Although there may be some individual members of RESPECT from Kilcooley, the Kilcooley Community Forum can categorically say no request for membership to the Forum has been received and therfore no decison made. Mark Gordon Community Development Manager said, "Kilcooley Community Forum is made up of constituted groups active within Kilcooley. It is unlikely any group from outside the community would be accepted for membership to the Forum. The constitution does allow for 'co-opting' accepting groups or individuals unto the Forum if they have a contribution to offer to the wider community. We have not received any such request from the leadership of RESPECT and should one be received the Full Forum body would deliberate and make the decision."

The Forum also distinguishes between the peaceful protests organised by RESPECT and the more radical actions of the group behind recent 292 graffiti across Bangor.
